Private ADHD Titration

There is a current national shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and an increased global demand.

Our service can provide private ADHD testing as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessments cost include the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A comprehensive assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted with a highly experienced consultant Psychiatrist. This will include an examination of your medical history as well as an assessment using the standard ADHD rating scales and Private ADHD Titration questionnaires.

After your evaluation, you will be informed that medication may be beneficial for your situation. This will take place at your follow-up appointment (which could be in person, via video link or by telephone). Your doctor will explain what medication options are available and, if you choose to start on medication we will suggest titrating the dose to optimise the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This is a process which can take several weeks and involves adjusting the dosage of your child's medication gradually until the proper balance is achieved. It's not uncommon to need to adjust two or three medicines before determining the most effective one for your child's ADHD symptoms. Parents must participate in this titration process and keep an watchful eye on their child's behavior to inform the doctor whether the medication is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to go back to NHS treatment, you will receive an individual prescription for your medication. You will have to pay for your prescription at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation cost. You must attend every six months to check your medication, which includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual exams are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is completed, you'll be able to make follow up appointments with your psychiatrist, if appropriate. Usually the appointment will take place through a video call using zoom however in some instances it is possible to do an audio only consultation (again at an additional cost).

At this point, we will discuss any treatment options we have and agree upon a bespoke individualised ADHD medication titration plan. This will include a discussion and review of your dosage of medication, as well as any adverse effects you may be experiencing. The cost of these titration sessions is PS150 for face to face sessions and PS60 for online or telephone video consultations. Costs for medication are extra and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The doctor will also ask you about your family history and the impact your ADHD symptoms have on your life, including any relationship issues you might be having or other mental health issues you may be experiencing. This is due to the fact that ADHD can be a genetic condition and it is crucial that we assess any family history that might indicate that you're at risk of developing the disorder.

During this examination, it is crucial that you are truthful and honest with your doctor who will be using the information you provide to determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is a crucial step, as an incorrect diagnosis could result in an inappropriate prescription of medication.

If you've decided that you'd like to receive treatment for your ADHD We will arrange a follow up appointment with one of our psychiatrists who specialise in this field. This can be done in the wake of your diagnosis if are eager to begin treatment immediately, or within two weeks if you prefer to take time to consider the implications of your diagnosis and the alternatives that are available to you.

If you're not sure what you would prefer We suggest you speak with your GP before booking your private examination as some providers have different policies about whether they require an GP referral letter or not. We also suggest to check if your GP accepts a "Shared-Care Agreement which means that once discharged from the clinic you will be sent back to them to get the prescription for the medication.

Medication

For many people who want an official diagnosis of ADHD medication is a key element of their treatment. It isn't always easy to obtain an appointment with a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists can be notoriously long, and GPs might be reluctant to refer their patients to specialist services.

Asking your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). You can select a provider that provides an assessment on your own and titration. This will help you reduce time and be more convenient, particularly if you have a busy schedule.

If you are diagnosed, your doctor will evaluate you to determine if need medication titration. You will be asked to fill in forms that are different for each provider, but the most common ones are self-report questionnaires as well as medical histories from childhood and adulthood. They will help your physician determine any issues that could suggest you should not take ADHD medications if they are prescribed.

If you are being titrated, the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. The combination will be carefully tested and monitored to find the best combination for you, taking into consideration any medical conditions you may have. The process of titration can be long and could require a few extra appointments before you're able to stay on your dose.

Based on the type of medication you are taking, follow up appointments could be scheduled monthly or quarterly. The appointment will involve your doctor checking to see if you are taking the correct medication, logging any side effects you have had and making any adjustments needed to ensure that you remain in a safe dosage. You'll also be required to undergo a regular health check that may include blood pressure, pulse and weight readings as well as an annual review.

Some people might be satisfied with their treatment and don't require discussing their titration process further. If, however, they require further discussions regarding their titration and treatment plan it is possible that they will be passed back to the private clinic that made their initial assessment. If this occurs, the titration consultation will be included in their consultation fee and they will be given their medication through private prescription (see Consultation fees above). This could cost more than a prescription from the NHS because the pharmacy will charge you for the medication.
