Titration

This is a process which can take several weeks and involves adjusting the dosage of your child's medication gradually until the appropriate balance is achieved. It is not unusual to need to adjust two or three medicines before finding the one that is best for your child's ADHD symptoms. It is important that parents take part in the titration process and keep an eye out for their child's behavior so they can inform the doctor whether the medication is working or causing adverse effects.

If you do not decide to return to NHS care and have decided to return to NHS care, your medication will be given as a private prescription which you'll have to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fee). You'll be required to attend six monthly appointments to monitor your medication, which includes pulse and blood pressure readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is complete, private ADHD titration you can schedule appointment with the psychiatrist. The appointment will usually be conducted via zoom video call. In some circumstances, it might be possible to have an audio-only appointment to be conducted (again with an additional cost).

If you're not sure which one you prefer it is recommended that you talk to your GP prior to scheduling your private assessment as some providers have different policies regarding whether they require a GP referral letter or not. We also advise to confirm that your GP accepts a "Shared Care Agreement which means that once discharged from the clinic, you will be returned to them for the prescription for the medication.

Medication

Medication is a key part of the journey for many people who are seeking an official ADHD diagnosis. It can be difficult to get an appointment with a psychiatrist on the NHS. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs are often reluctant to refer patients on to specialist services.

Asking your GP to refer you to Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). This means you can select a provider that offers a private assessment and titration service. This can reduce your wait time considerably and can be more convenient if you're working and have a full schedule.

After you have been recommended, your physician will examine your condition to determine if you need medication adjustment. You will be asked to fill out forms that differ by doctor but the main ones are self-report questionnaires and medical histories from childhood and adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor to determine if there are factors that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medication, even when they've been prescribed.

If you are being titrated, the medication will consist of stimulants and nonstimulant medicines. They will be tested and monitored to find the right combination for you. The titration can be lengthy and may require a number of additional appointments before the dose becomes stable.
