Replacement Upvc Window Handles

The majority of replacement windows handles made of upvc include everything you need. However, if your old handle was held in place with pins or screws they will need to removed. Remove the'snap-in' covers at the base of the handle.

The next step is to identify what type of window lock and handle you are replacing. This is crucial!

Espag

Espag handles are a set of multipoint locks that are fitted to casement window types such as uPVC or wooden double glazing. They come with seven millimetre square spindles that fits into the gearbox on the window made of uPVC. When the handle is turned, it triggers with a series of locks that run around the perimeter of the window. Espag handles are also known as shootbolt handles and offer extra security compared to the conventional single point lock found on older frames.

They are available in a range of different styles, such as inline and cranked handle designs that can be used either left or right hand operation. There are also ergonomic handles that enhance the appearance and feel of your window as well as the handle.

You will need to measure the size of the spindle from the base of your uPVC handle if you wish to purchase the right replacement. This measurement is known as step height. It will aid you in finding the perfect uPVC handle for your home.

You may have to remove any screw covers which protect the screws that hold the handle in place, and if this is the case, use a screwdriver or pliers to break the pins holding the handle. After removing the pins or screws that hold the spindle in place you can take it apart to disassemble the handle.

After removing the handle you can open the locking mechanism within the frame of the windows and remove the cockspur block connected to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The replacement uPVC handles you purchased will be able to slide over the cockspur block before sliding into handle spindle to allow the window to be opened again. Ideally, you should replace the cockspur wedge block with a new one whenever you replace your uPVC handle to ensure that it is securely secured.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are found on older uPVC or aluminum windows. The handle is closed and then turns onto a wedge-shaped plastic receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches which are also covered in this section.) They can be locked or non-lockable. They are available in different nose heights that can be adjusted to the existing frame.

The handle is secured with the small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. These are usually single-way handles, but the deadlock that locks can be fitted to provide additional security.

Similar to Espag handles cockspur handle replacements are simple to put in place, all you need is new screws (supplied) and the correct backset. The backset is the distance between the baseplate of the window to the underside of the handle's nose. Aluminium window frames are usually 9mm wide, whereas UPVC is 21mm wide. There are many other variations though so it is important to take a measurement before buying the handle (see video below for how).

The spindle or, in certain instances, the entire handle assembly can be removed by unscrewing the handle. The new handle can be screwed in place using a pair of pozidriv screws. The pozidriv screw can be purchased in a brass or zinc finish to match the existing hardware. There is also an option of self-locking pozidriv screws.

It is a simple to install cockspur handle replacement that is perfect for repairing or replacing old uPVC windows. They have a universal design which makes them suitable for most profiles and backsets. Each handle comes with 3 packers of different thickness. They are placed on the side of the handle's nose and can be arranged in various ways to achieve backsets of 9, 13mm 17mm, 21mm, and 13mm. The handles are available in left and right-handed versions and in lockable and nonlockable models. They also come in a variety nose heights.

Tilt and Turn

Tilt and turn windows are a premium European window design that has been used for a long time in Europe however, it is only getting noticed in the US. They combine the benefits of 3 window styles - tilt, in-swing and pivot. This makes them suitable for older homes as they are able to provide a greater level of ventilation than traditional window types.

When in the closed position tilt and turn windows close like the normal fixed window. But, by turning the handle 90° or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the sash can be opened upwards and the window can be tilted in order to allow air circulation through the space at the top of the frame. This is a great method to let air circulate without the need to open a large window, which could pose a safety risk if not properly secured when opening.

If the handle is turned a further 90or 180 degrees the sash can be fully opened like doors. This allows for full air circulation which is especially useful for rooms that are smoky or where smoke or other smells can build up. This allows you to easily clean the glass's exterior by doing it from inside your home. This is a job that often requires a lot of risk.

Tilt-and-turn windows are also secure. When locked in a closed position, they are difficult to open from the outside, and they come with double seals that stop rainwater from entering the home when in the tilted in-swing position. This feature is especially useful for older homes, where burglars tend to target windows that can be opened using side hinges.

Spade

There are many kinds of window handles that can be installed to upvc double glazed windows. There are two primary types of handles: Cockspur and Espag. Other choices include tilt and turn handles as well as spade or blade handles, monkey tail handles and Replacement Upvc Window Handles a variety of other kinds. The type of handle you select will depend on the style you prefer and the kind of windows you have.

You need to be aware of how your current handle is connected to the frame in order to choose the right replacement Upvc handle. This is referred to as handing and is a crucial piece of information to know when shopping online. Some handle variations do not fit all windows. For example, some handles are angled while others are straight and will turn either left or right. You'll also require the spindle's size that is the distance between the base of the handle and the head of handle.

Another aspect to consider when choosing the right handle is knowing whether your windows need a restrictor or not. These are typically used in high-rise flats or commercial buildings, but are not required for homes that are primarily residential. Lastly, you should also take into consideration step height, which is the distance from the top of the screw plate to the apex of the handle.

Spade is a word that comes from Old English spadu or spaedu and has been translated into various languages, including German spaten and Low German Spathen. In the 1920s during the Harlem Renaissance in New York City spade began to be used as a derogatory term for black people. Since then spade has been an emblem of African American pride and heritage.

When replacing the handle of a Cadenza handle, it's crucial that you choose the right size. The handles are available in straight and angled designs that differ by a few millimetres. The handle head can be shaped in a D or a T shape, or even have no handles at all.
