Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a national shortage of medications to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and an increased global demand.

Our service can offer private ADHD titration as an alternative to waiting for NHS funding through Right to Choose. Our assessments are free and include the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A comprehensive assessment of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist. This includes a complete medical history, as well as an evaluation using the common ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your examination, you will be advised if medication is considered to be beneficial for your situation. This will be discussed at your follow up appointment (which can be scheduled in person, via video link or by phone). Your physician will explain to you the various options for medication and if you decide to start on medication we will suggest titrating dosage to ensure the benefits/side effects balance for you.

This is a process which may take several weeks, and requires adjusting your child's dosage gradually until the appropriate balance is reached. It's not uncommon to have to adjust up to three different medications before you can find the one that best fits your child's ADHD. Parents must take part in this process of titration and keep a close eye on their child's behaviour, so that they can let the doctor know whether the medication is helping or causing adverse effects.

If you decide to return to NHS treatment, you will receive an individual prescription for your medication. You will have to pay at the pharmacy. This is not included in the consultation cost. You will be required to attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication. This includes blood pressure and pulse readings. Annual reviews are also mandatory.

Follow-up appointments

Once the assessment is completed and you are satisfied, you can schedule appointment with the psychiatrist. The appointment usually takes place through a video call using zoom, although in certain cases it might be possible to schedule an audio-only consultation (again at an additional cost).

We will then discuss treatment options and decide on a bespoke, individualised ADHD medication adjustment. This will include an assessment of your medication dose and a discussion around any side effects you might be experiencing. The cost for these titration consultations is PS150 for private adhd titration face to face sessions and PS60 for online or phone video consultations. Costs for medication are extra and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

The psychiatrist will ask you questions about your family history and the effects of your ADHD symptoms on your daily life and any relationship problems or mental health issues that you might be experiencing. This is because ADHD can be a genetic disorder and it is crucial to examine any family history that might indicate whether you are at risk of developing the disorder.

During the assessment, it is crucial to be truthful and honest with the clinician, as they will be using the information you provide to determine whether you are able to meet the diagnostic criteria for ADHD. This is an important step, since the wrong diagnosis can result in a prescription for medication that is not appropriate.

If you decide to seek treatment for adhd medication titration we'll schedule an appointment for a follow-up visit with a psychiatrist who specializes in this field. If you'd like to begin treatment right away, you can do this at the time of diagnosis. You can also take two weeks to consider the implications of the diagnosis and the options available to you.

We recommend that if you are unsure about your preferences, talk with your GP prior to booking your private appointment. Certain providers have different policies regarding whether they require the submission of a GP letter. We also suggest that you check whether your GP accepts a 'Shared Care Agreement', which means that after you have been discharged from the clinic you will be returned to them for the prescription for the medication.

Medication

For many people who want a private diagnosis of ADHD, medication is an important part of their journey. The process of getting a prescription from an NHS psychiatrist can be a hassle and time-consuming. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs are often reluctant to refer patients to specialist services.

One method to circumvent this is to ask your GP to refer you through Right to Choose (see psychiatry-uk and ADHD 360). This means that you can select one that provides a private assessment and titration service. This will help you save time and be more convenient, particularly in the event of a hectic work schedule.

After you have been diagnosed, your doctor will evaluate you to determine if you need medication adjustment. You'll need to complete forms that differ by provider, but the most common ones are self-reporting questions and medical histories that go to your childhood and into adulthood. These forms will allow your doctor to determine if there are any factors that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications, if they have been prescribed.

If you are being titrated, the medication will consist of a mixture of stimulants and nonstimulant medications. These will be thoroughly examined and monitored to determine the most suitable combination for you. The titration process can be long and may require several extra appointments before the dose becomes stable.

Based on the type of medication you're taking, follow-up appointments could be scheduled monthly or quarterly. Your clinician will check whether you are safe with the medication, record any adverse reactions you've experienced and make any needed adjustments to ensure that you remain on a safe dosage. You'll also be required to attend a routine health check that may include blood pressure, pulse and weight readings as well as an annual check-up.

For some individuals it could be that they are happy with their medication and don't require a further discussion about their titration. If you're required to discuss your titration plan or treatment plan more thoroughly it is likely that you'll be sent back to the private doctor who made your initial assessment. In this scenario the titration is included in the consultation cost. The medication will be provided through the private prescription. This can cost more than an NHS prescription since the pharmacy will charge for the medication.
