Many people install slim double glazing units in their homes of the past to bring the house into the 21st Century without changing the design of the frame. These units are designed to fit into rebates originally intended for 4-5mm single glazing. However, they may not always fit exactly and can be difficult to keep tidy.

The units are advertised as having a viewline between 8 and 10 millimeters. However, they utilize the "warm edge" spacer bar which reduces visibility. To achieve this sightline, the sealant on the back of the unit has to be reduced in size. This could have a major impact on the IGU’s ability to withstand moisture and gas loss, which could lead to premature IGU failure.

The biggest issue with these units is that they do not meet the thermal performance requirements of Part 2 and 3 of EN 1279, which requires a minimum sealing depth over the bar's spacer of 8mm. This reduces the thermal efficiency by approximately 10 percent. These units are then guaranteed by the manufacturers to meet this requirement. However, these tests are not performed on these reduced-sightline narrow cavity units.
