Amazon Expands Online Grocery Shopping in the UK

It's one thing to disrupt the status quo of a bookselling industry but it's quite another to take on Tesco at its own game in the realm of grocery. However, this could be a source of contention on the side of supermarkets' already-thin margins.

But is it working? According to Mintel the online giant has caught up in the UK’s ultra-competitive food sector however, its percentage of online shopping is 3%.

Cost

With a market share of less than a tenth of Tesco's, Amazon has fired a new salvo in the war for the British wallets. Amazon plans to expand its online Fresh service from London and select Home Counties to all of the major towns and cities. This move will put it into some minor competition with Deliveroo which provides same-day delivery of groceries in London. Amazon will also be facing competition from its own marketplace partners from third parties which include Waitrose and Morrisons.

It's unlikely that this latest development will have a huge impact on the overall sales of supermarkets, but it may spook certain big players. In fact, the retail workers union Usdaw has already expressed concerns that the new venture could result in job losses.

The service will provide free same-day delivery to Prime members in London and select Home Counties. Customers can choose between 10,000 chilled and frozen items offered by brand and independent suppliers. This includes artisan producers like Gail's Artisan Bakery, C Lidgate and Booths, Whole Foods Market as well as Danone, Britvic and Arla.

The big four are unlikely to engage in an arms race with a company as formidable as Amazon and will continue to rely on their vast store inventory as well as click-and-collect services, as well as national delivery options.

It is also possible that Amazon will decide that the best approach to enter the eGrocery sector Amazon Online Grocery Shopping Uk is to partner with existing supermarket chains. Amazon already has several of these partnerships in place. One is with the high-end retailer Waitrose, which allows the chain's products to be sold on the Amazon website and then delivered to customers. There is also a deal with the discount supermarket Iceland which allows its own website sell items via the Amazon Online Grocery Shopping Uk site that are delivered from local stores.

It's a convenient way to buy groceries and also save money by using coupons and special discounts.

Amazon's move, despite its tiny footprint, will be a major threat to Tesco and other U.K. supermarkets, who already struggle with the increasing cost of living. Amazon is trying to capture more of the country's consumers with cash shortages. Its plan seems based on the premise that it can become an established player by offering a broad range of products and fast delivery.

The company has also widened its Prime Pantry to allow users to purchase thousands of household items, including laundry detergent, kitchen appliances, and much more. The list includes brands such as Kellogg's, Ariel, and Colgate however, it doesn't include frozen or fresh food items. The expansion of the Pantry is an immediate response to the increasing number of people using online grocery services according to a study from Kantar Retail.

Amazon announced that, in an effort to increase its market share in the UK it will match the price of a certain number grocery items on its site with the most attractive offers available to Tesco Clubcard card holders. The move was made to compete with discounters that have been taking away market share from the four major supermarkets. Amazon will be better able to focus on a population with less disposable income and increased price sensitivity.

Convenience

Despite its big ambitions in the retail sector, Amazon has struggled to make inroads. A new shot this week was fired in its battle against the powerful incumbents in the UK, a move that could help the company move from a lone player to one of the country's most serious challengers.
