Amazon Expands Online Grocery Shopping in the UK

It's one thing to shake up an old-fashioned industry like the bookselling industry, but it's a different matter to compete with Tesco in the field of grocery. However, the move could be a problem on the side of supermarkets' already slim margins.

Can it be successful? According to Mintel the giant of e-commerce has gotten into the food industry that is extremely competitive in the UK however, its percentage of online shopping is 3%.

Cost

With a grocery market share less than a tenth of Tesco's, Amazon has fired a new shot in the battle for Britain's wallets. It plans to expand the Fresh service online to cover all major cities and towns in the UK, starting with London and a few Home Counties. This puts it in a minor concurrence with Deliveroo which already offers same-hour grocery delivery in London. Amazon will also be competing with its own third-party marketplace partner, like Waitrose and Morrisons.

This latest move is unlikely to have an impact on overall supermarket sales however, it could be a cause for concern for certain big players. Retail workers' union Usdaw is already concerned that the new venture could lead to job loss.

The service will provide free same-day delivery for Prime members in London and select Home Counties. Customers will have a choice between 10,000 chilled and frozen products, supplied by brand and independent suppliers. This includes artisan producers such as Gail's Artisan Bakery, C Lidgate and Booths, Whole Foods Market and Danone, Britvic and Arla.

Mintel's most recent online grocery shopping report reveals that over half of the nation's online shoppers purchase their groceries from supermarket websites, with the largest being Ocado and Tesco. The four major supermarkets are unlikely to wage pricing wars with Amazon's size. They will continue to depend on their large store estates as well as Click-and-Collect and national delivery options.

It's also possible that Amazon will decide that the best approach to get into the e-grocery sector is to join forces with existing supermarket chains. There are already a number of these agreements in place, including a deal with the high-end retailer Waitrose that permits the chain to sell its products on the Amazon website and then deliver the items to customers.
