When you arrive, pull into your parking space and dial the number to let an associate know you're there. The associate will take your order to you in the parking lot.

5. Peapod

A pioneer in online grocery shopping, Peapod operates in 24 markets across the US. Customers can place orders and receive deliveries of pantry items, groceries, fresh produce, deli items such as meats, dairy organic and natural food, prepared meals, school and office items, personal care products and alcohol in certain markets. Customers can also collect their orders at more than 200 Peapod pickup locations, most of which are attached to Ahold USA-owned brick and mortar stores, such as Stop & Shop.

Peapod utilizes the information it gathers to identify brands and products that shoppers like, and allows them to suggest similar items. The system lets shoppers view all items in their shopping carts at once and to use search filters to narrow down results. Since grocery shopping is a largely routine activity, the Skokie-based company uses data to predict which products the consumer will buy which pushes those items to the top of the list.

The service is based on its drivers, which are also referred to as brand ambassadors. Bienkowski explained to Food Dive that food is an emotional experience. Being able to interact directly with the person delivering the food makes it more pleasant and convenient. When customers see their food items delivered by the driver, they know that the order is in safe hands.

Peapod, as an early innovator in online grocery shopping has invested in technology to ensure that it can stay competitive against its rivals. It hasn't had as big of an impact on the market as other grocery delivery services such as Instacart or Amazon Fresh. However, the 28-year veteran of the battle for online grocery delivery is working to boost its competitiveness by expanding its e-commerce offerings. It has launched a new mobile experience based on the PRISM platform, which is proprietary to Ahold Delhaize USA, and its own websites.
