It challenged the conventional psychological notions that the mother-infant relationship was based solely on the satisfaction of infants' basic physical needs. She was also enthralled by the work of Harry Harlow a University of Wisconsin researcher psychologist who had conducted a controversial experiment using infants monkeys. His findings that the monkeys preferred to snuggle with a fake "surrogate mother" in an icy cold, wrapped in wire "mother" without food, challenged the notion that the relationship between the infant and a parent is dependent on fulfilling biological needs.

Ainsworth has been a tireless researcher to advance her research throughout her life. In 1998, she received the American Psychological Association's Mentor Award in Developmental Psychology and the Gold Medal of Life Achievement.
