Customers can also pick up their items at over 200 Peapod pickup points, many of which are located in brick-and-mortar shops operated by Ahold USA like Stop & Shop.

Peapod uses data to identify customers' top brands and products that allow the online grocer to suggest similar items. The system allows shoppers to view everything in their shopping cart at once and make use of filters to narrow the results. Since grocery shopping is a routine activity, the Skokie, Illinois-based company uses data to predict what items the customer will purchase and then push them to the top of the list.

The service is based around its drivers, also known as brand ambassadors. Bienkowski explained to Food Dive that food is an emotional experience. Being able to communicate directly with the person who delivers the order makes it more pleasant and convenient. When customers see their food items delivered by the driver they know that the order is in safe hands.

Peapod is an early innovator in online grocery shopping has invested in technology to ensure that it can remain competitive with its competitors. But it hasn't been able to make as significant an impact as other grocery delivery services like Instacart and Amazon Fresh.
