William Clark opened the first high-end drapers' shop in London's West End in 1778. It soon became the world's most well-known department store with more than 200 large stores and exclusive partnerships with the top fashion designers.

In 1998, it became part of the Arcadia Group. In the following year, it purchased the Danish department store Magasin du Nord. It revamped its brand with its own collections, such as Designers at Debenhams. It also established a global presence by opening two Middle East stores.
