While working at the Tavistock Clinic, Ainsworth and Bowlby continued their studies on attachment, studying the effects interference with the mother-infant bond could affect the development of children. Their findings indicated that if the bond is broken it can result in problems with development and emotional.

Ainsworth was inspired in his research by the study of interactions between animals, or ethology. It challenged conventional psychological beliefs that the mother-infant relationship was solely based on satisfaction of infants' basic physical needs. She was also enthralled by the work of Harry Harlow a University of Wisconsin researcher psychologist who conducted a controversial experiment using infant monkeys. His finding that the monkeys preferred snuggling with a fabricated surrogate mother to a cold, wire wrapped "mother" without food challenged the traditional belief that a parent-infant relationship is built on satisfying biological needs.

Ainsworth has been a tireless researcher to further her research throughout her entire life. In 1998, Ainsworth was awarded the American Psychological Association Mentor Award for Developmental Psychology as well as the Gold Medal of Life Achievement.
