You can quickly determine the alignment of your locks by testing the deadbolt. Use red lipstick to test the latch. When you turn the key, the handle should return to the upright position. Alternately, you can remove off the strike plate in order to verify whether the latch is aligned.

It is also possible to check the gap between the door and the frame to see if it is misaligned. If the gap is bigger than half an inch, you may have an unaligned lock.

Door frame fixings can be adjusted by using an Allen key. Once the fixings are in place you can make sure to tighten them. However, do not over-tighten them, or the door may sag.

Applying an oil-based lubricant to the lock is a good idea particularly if you have a large glazed door. This will reduce the pressure on the locking mechanism, and stop it from breaking.
